26. A Couple of Days in Figueira da Foz

Looking down a Figueira da Foz street Breakfast Surf Check, Figueira da Foz c. November 1998, by R.Stone.

One time a friend and I thought we’d get the bus from Lisbon to Ericeira. The bus driver refused to let us on with surfboards, so we opted for plan b - a train to Figueira da Foz.

We arrived just about on dusk. The train station is sort of south east of the township, surrounded by industrial zones and unclaimed land.

It wasn’t very inviting, but we set off for a walk west toward the ocean.

Someone in a shop told us we could stay in a little pensao in one of the alleys in town. So that’s what we did. The surf was flat, and had been since leaving Biarritz two days earlier.

The next morning we looked out the balcony of our first floor room, and saw a new swell marching in at the bottom of the street. We spent the next two days surfing some pretty sweet pointbreaks, the best of which I think is called Buarcos.
